Ireland has
many beautiful areas for you to explore on your own, take
your hire car out of the
city and " head for the hills"!! With some of the
most stunning scenery in
Europe, (and some say in the world) - the Irish country side
is waiting to be discovered. Take a picnic
from your hotel or guesthouse for the day, and discover the
mountains of Wicklow in the East or Connemara in the
West.
The island of Ireland is relatively easy to get around, check
out our Driving
pages, for some tips on driving and roadsigns to
watch out for. Generally the main roads cutting accross the
country are very good, but are networked by small villages
and towns, where traffic delays may occur. Hoewever, if you
allow plenty of time for your journey perhaps, venture onto
some secondary roads, you will avoid traffic, and see parts
of Ireland that many tourists fail to see and appreciate.
Here we have suggested some
areas to discover - to get you on the road! Safe driving!
Discover
the South West of Ireland: County Kerry
The beauty of County Kerry is unimaginable. As you
drive through Killarney,
Tralee, Dingle and the Ring
of Kerry itself, you will be amazed by its
rugged beauty.
Whether you stay inland or travel along its beautiful coastline you will have a multitude to see and
do. During the summer, Kerry is a wonderful place to
visit, as every small town and village is a hive of
activity with craft shops, coffee shops, festivals and
lots more to enjoy along the way.
Killarney
is a must for visitors to the area, the
scenery all around the famous Lakes
of Killarney is breathtaking and there are
many viewing points around the lakes. The
Gap of Dunloe is a beautiful glacial valley
in the Macgillacuddy Reeks mountain range, which
dominate the skyline of Killarney. Here you may enjoy
an energetic walk or cycle its rough path.
There are also lots of places
to visit such as Muckross
House and Gardens, which is accessible by either a long walk up
the avenue, or a trek in a pony and trap! There
are a multitude of restaurants, arts and craft shops,
pubs and accommodations in and around Killarney and
you will surely find lots to do.
The
Dingle Peninsula is the most westerly point
in Ireland and retains much of it's tradition and
folklore. Dingle and it's environs are a Gaeltacht
(Irish speaking) area and is also steeped in a
rich history and culture. Stretching westward
from the town of Tralee for 30 miles, the peninsula
has a backbone of mountains, the highest being Mount
Brandon, 3,127 ft (952m)
The stunning scenery of the peninsula offers the
perfect backdrop for many activities. There are
many walking and cycling routes and tours to avail of,
two excellent links courses, shore-angling, diving. The
Ring of Kerry takes in about 176 km of the
most southern peninsula in Kerry, Iveragh, this will
take you through some beautiful villages and towns
such as Killarney, Kenmare,
Waterville, Glenbeigh and Killorglin
and there is plenty to see and do on
the way, including fishing, golf, walking and
discovering the local area.
